How to store Omnitrope

Quoted from the US label · Unopened vs in use · Travel · Sources · Reviewed

Short answer: Keep Omnitrope cartridges and vials in the fridge at 36-46°F (2-8°C), in the carton, and never freeze them. After first use, a cartridge stays in the pen in the fridge for up to 28 days. The 5.8 mg vial, once mixed, must be used within 21 days, refrigerated. Throw away anything cloudy or with particles. What does the Omnitrope label say?

Omnitrope US prescribing information, section 16.2 and Table 11.

Section 16.2: “Before use, store OMNITROPE vials and cartridges refrigerated at 2° to 8°C (36° to 46°F) in the original carton to protect from light. Do not freeze.”

How do you store Omnitrope between doses?

Cartridges: “When the Omnitrope Pen 5 contains a cartridge, do not remove the cartridge from the Pen in between injections. Store the Pen containing the cartridge in the storage case provided and place in the refrigerator.” An empty pen with no cartridge can be kept at room temperature.

Vial: “After mixing the medicine, the medicine in the vial must be used within 3 weeks.” Its diluent is bacteriostatic water with 1.5% benzyl alcohol. Dose math is on the HGH page.

What if Omnitrope froze, got warm or looks cloudy?

Section 16.2 says do not freeze; the label gives no room-temperature allowance for cartridges or a mixed vial. The 5.8 mg instructions: if the liquid is cloudy or contains particles after removal from the fridge, “throw away the vial. Do not inject the medicine from this vial.” Ask your pharmacist about a cartridge that froze or sat out.

The Instructions for Use do say to leave a new cartridge at room temperature for about 30 minutes before loading it. That is a short warm-up, not a storage allowance.

How do you travel with it?

Omnitrope needs to stay at 36-46°F (2-8°C), so travel with the pen in its case inside an insulated bag with cold packs that do not touch it, and put it back in a fridge on arrival.

  • TSA allows medically necessary liquids over 3.4 oz in carry-on bags; declare them at the checkpoint for inspection.
  • Unused syringes and pen needles are allowed when they travel with the injectable medicine.
  • Ice packs and gel packs that keep medicine cool may go through frozen, partly frozen or melted.
  • Keep medicine in your carry-on, not checked luggage, where you cannot control the temperature. Do not let it touch an ice pack directly, since most labels say do not freeze.
