How to store Zepbound

Quoted from the US label · Unopened vs in use · Travel · Sources · Reviewed

Short answer: Store Zepbound in the fridge at 36-46°F (2-8°C) in its carton. Single-dose pens and vials may be kept unrefrigerated, not above 86°F (30°C), for up to a total of 21 days. A KwikPen or multi-dose vial is thrown away after 30 days at room temperature, 30 days after first use, or 4 weekly doses. Do not use Zepbound that has frozen.

What does the Zepbound label say about storage?

Section 16.2 applies to all forms: “Do not freeze ZEPBOUND. Do not use ZEPBOUND if frozen. Protect ZEPBOUND from heat and light. Store ZEPBOUND in the original carton to protect from light.”

How do you store Zepbound vials?

Zepbound comes in single-dose vials as well as pens. Per the single-dose vial Instructions for Use, store unopened vials in the fridge; “You may store the unopened vial at room temperature up to 86°F (30°C) for up to a total of 21 days,” and “Throw away all opened vials after use, even if there is medicine left in the vial.”

If you buy the 4-vial carton, each vial has its own 21-day total. Keep them in the carton to protect them from light.

The multi-dose vial Instructions for Use: once opened, store it in the fridge or at room temperature up to 86°F, and throw it away after a total of 30 days at room temperature, 30 days after first use, or 4 weekly doses, “even if there is medicine left in it.” See the Zepbound guide and the tirzepatide page.

What if Zepbound froze or got too warm?

Frozen: “Do not freeze your pen. If the pen has been frozen, throw the pen away and use a new pen” (pen Instructions for Use). The same applies to vials.

Too warm: the room-temperature allowance stops at 86°F (30°C). Above that the label gives no allowance; ask your pharmacist. Do not use Zepbound that is cloudy, discolored or has particles.

How do you travel with it?

Single-dose pens and vials can travel unrefrigerated, not above 86°F (30°C), within their 21-day total. In a hot car or a sunny window the temperature can pass 86°F quickly, so use an insulated bag.

  • TSA allows medically necessary liquids over 3.4 oz in carry-on bags; declare them at the checkpoint for inspection.
  • Unused syringes and pen needles are allowed when they travel with the injectable medicine.
  • Ice packs and gel packs that keep medicine cool may go through frozen, partly frozen or melted.
  • Keep medicine in your carry-on, not checked luggage, where you cannot control the temperature. Do not let it touch an ice pack directly, since most labels say do not freeze.
