Short answer: Keep new Victoza pens in the fridge at 36-46°F (2-8°C), away from the cooling element. After first use the pen lasts 30 days at 59-86°F (15-30°C) or in the fridge. Never use Victoza that froze, and throw it away if it went above 86°F (30°C). A pen left out by mistake before first use must be used or thrown away within 30 days.
| Situation | What the label says |
|---|---|
| Before first use | Refrigerator 36-46°F (2-8°C); not in the freezer or next to the cooling element |
| After first use | 30 days at 59-86°F (15-30°C) or in the refrigerator |
| Left out by mistake before first use | Use or throw away within 30 days |
| Above 86°F (30°C) | Throw away |
| Frozen | Do not use |
Section 16: “After first use of the VICTOZA pen, the pen can be stored for 30 days at controlled room temperature 59°F to 86°F (15°C to 30°C) or in a refrigerator 36°F to 46°F (2°C to 8°C).”
Thirty days. The Instructions for Use: “Use a Victoza pen for only 30 days. Throw away a used Victoza pen 30 days after you start using it, even if some medicine is left in the pen.”
Remove the needle after each injection and store the pen without it. The label says this reduces “the potential for contamination, infection, and leakage while also ensuring dosing accuracy.” Victoza and Saxenda are both liraglutide; see the liraglutide page.
Frozen: “Do not freeze Victoza or use Victoza if it has been frozen” (Instructions for Use).
Hot: “If Victoza has been exposed to temperatures above 86ºF (30ºC), it should be thrown away.” Protect it from excessive heat and sunlight.
The Victoza Instructions for Use cover this directly: “When carrying the pen away from home, store the pen at room temperature between 59ºF to 86ºF (15ºC to 30ºC).” An in-use pen can stay out for the rest of its 30 days.
