Short answer: Store Depo-Testosterone at 68-77°F (20-25°C) and protect it from light. It does not go in the fridge. If it gets cold, crystals can form; the label says warming and shaking the vial should redissolve them. The label gives no day count for an opened 10 mL multi-dose vial; CDC's general rule for opened multi-dose vials is 28 days unless the maker says otherwise.
How Supplied section: “Store at 20° to 25°C (68° to 77°F) [see USP Controlled Room Temperature]. Protect from light.” Depo-Testosterone comes as 100 mg/mL in 10 mL vials and 200 mg/mL in 1 mL and 10 mL vials.
| Question | Label answer |
|---|---|
| Temperature | 68-77°F (20-25°C) |
| Light | Protect from light |
| Fridge | Not on the label; recommended storage is room temperature |
| Crystals | Warming and shaking the vial should redissolve crystals formed below the recommended temperature |
| After opening | No day count on the label |
Dosage and Administration: “Warming and shaking the vial should redissolve any crystals that may have formed during storage at temperatures lower than recommended.” Cold is the usual cause, which is one reason not to keep it in the fridge.
The label also says to inspect the solution for particles and discoloration before use. If crystals do not dissolve after warming, ask your pharmacist.
The Depo-Testosterone label does not give an in-use period. CDC, citing USP chapter 797, says opened multi-dose vials should be dated and discarded within 28 days unless the manufacturer specifies a different date. That rule is written for healthcare settings; it is the closest primary source for a vial you use at home. Your pharmacist can tell you what applies to your vial.
Depo-Testosterone contains benzyl alcohol as a preservative; the label warns that benzyl alcohol has been associated with the “gasping syndrome” and death in pediatric patients. Generic testosterone cypionate has its own label; dose and volume math is on the testosterone cypionate page.
Vials can travel at room temperature. Avoid cold car trunks in winter, which can cause crystals, and hot cars in summer.
