Short answer: The Jardiance label says to take a missed dose as soon as possible and not to double the next dose. The Medication Guide adds: if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one and take the next at the usual time. Never take two Jardiance tablets at the same time.
| Situation | What the label says |
|---|---|
| Schedule | Once daily in the morning, with or without food (2.2) |
| Missed a dose | Take it as soon as possible (2.4) |
| Almost time for the next dose | Skip the missed dose (Medication Guide) |
| Doubling up | Do not double the next dose (2.4) |
| Half-life | About 12.4 hours (12.3) |
Section 2.4 of the Jardiance prescribing information says that if a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible, and do not double up the next dose. The Medication Guide says: take it as soon as you remember; if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the medicine at the next regularly scheduled time.
Example: you take Jardiance at 8 a.m. and remember at noon. Under the label you would take it at noon. If you only remember at 7 a.m. the next day, that is almost time for the next dose, so you would skip the missed one and take one tablet at 8 a.m.
The label does not give a number of hours. If you are unsure, ask your pharmacist where they draw the line for a once-daily tablet. The label is clear that two tablets should never be taken together.
Empagliflozin has a terminal half-life of about 12.4 hours (section 12.3). The Medication Guide also tells patients to talk with their healthcare provider if they have questions about a missed dose.
