What Does Lyophilized Mean? Freeze-Dried Peptides

Lyophilized (freeze-dried)

Also called lyophilised, freeze-dried, lyophilized powder, lyophilization · Reviewed

Definition: Lyophilized means freeze-dried. The drug solution is frozen and the water is then removed, leaving a dry powder in the vial. Proteins and peptides are often made this way because they break down faster in water. A lyophilized drug has to be mixed with a liquid (reconstituted) before it is injected.

Why drugs are freeze-dried

A 2000 review of protein drug development explains the reason plainly: proteins have limited physical and chemical stability, so they often have to be made into a solid form to reach an acceptable shelf life, and lyophilization is the most common way to do that. The same review notes that freezing and drying are themselves stresses that can damage proteins, which is why products use stabilizers and tested processes.

Approved labels show the pattern. Novarel (hCG), Omnitrope (somatropin) vials and Egrifta SV (tesamorelin) all ship as lyophilized powder with a separate diluent. The Novarel label says "the sterile lyophilized powder is stable" and stores it at room temperature before mixing.

Why it matters when you track doses

Two clocks run on a lyophilized product. Before mixing, the expiry date on the box applies. After mixing, a much shorter limit starts, and the storage rules often change too. Logging the mix date is how you know which clock you are on.

Novarel, from the label

  1. Before mixing: store at room temperature, 20 to 25°C (68 to 77°F).
  2. After mixing: refrigerate at 2 to 8°C (36 to 46°F) and use within 30 days.
  3. Mixed on October 1: day 30 is October 31. Doses logged after that are outside the label.

Common mix-ups

  • Freeze-dried is not the same as frozen. The powder is dry. Freezing a mixed solution is a separate question, covered in can you freeze peptides.
  • Powder stability does not carry over. A stable powder says nothing about how long the solution lasts after mixing.
  • Research vials have no tested numbers. Label limits belong to the approved product. For research peptides, no published study gives a shelf life for the mixed vial.

Frequently asked questions

What does lyophilized mean on a vial?+
It means the drug was freeze-dried into a powder. You add a liquid, the diluent, to dissolve it before use.
Why are peptides sold as powder?+
Proteins and peptides are less stable in water. A 2000 review notes that making them into a solid form is often needed for an acceptable shelf life.
Does lyophilized powder need to be refrigerated?+
It depends on the product label. Novarel powder is stored at room temperature before mixing and refrigerated after.
