Pramlintide is a synthetic analog of amylin, a hormone made with insulin by the pancreas. It is FDA approved as Symlin, taken before meals alongside mealtime insulin by people with type 1 or type 2 diabetes whose glucose is not controlled on insulin alone.
Also known as: Symlin.
Symlin comes as ready-to-use multidose pens with nothing to mix: SymlinPen 60 (1.5 mL) and SymlinPen 120 (2.7 mL), both 1000 mcg/mL. The label doses are in micrograms: type 1 diabetes starts at 15 mcg before major meals, raised in 15 mcg steps to 30 or 60 mcg; type 2 diabetes starts at 60 mcg and goes up to 120 mcg. It must be injected separately from insulin, never mixed with it.
If you also use a powder peptide, the free peptide reconstitution calculator handles the vial math.
The FDA Symlin label gives a half-life of about 48 minutes in healthy people and a time to peak of about 20 minutes after an injection under the skin, with bioavailability of about 30% to 40%. The label also carries a boxed warning about severe low blood sugar when used with insulin.
Numbers shown are taken from the source above. Half-life varies from person to person and with injection site.
