How to store telmisartan and Micardis HCT

Quoted from the US label · Unopened vs in use · Travel · Sources · Reviewed

Short answer: Both labels say store at 68°F to 77°F (20°C to 25°C), with excursions to 59°F to 86°F (15°C to 30°C) in section 16. The tablets take up water, so they stay in their pack until right before you take one: generic telmisartan in its bottle, Micardis HCT in its blister. Micardis HCT cartons say moisture sensitive tablets. Neither gives a fridge instruction.

What do the two labels say?

Telmisartan is a blood pressure tablet; Micardis HCT adds hydrochlorothiazide. For plain telmisartan this page uses the Alembic generic tablets label; brand Micardis and other makers carry their own.

Why do the tablets stay in the pack?

Both labels say in section 11 that the tablets are “hygroscopic and require protection from moisture”, meaning they pull water from the air.

  • Micardis HCT section 16: “Store at 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F); excursions permitted to 15°C to 30°C (59°F to 86°F) [see USP Controlled Room Temperature]. Tablets should not be removed from blisters until immediately before administration.” Section 2.3 says the same about the blisters.
  • Micardis HCT carton: “Important: Moisture sensitive tablets - do not remove from blisters until immediately before administration.” The Patient Information: “Do not remove MICARDIS HCT tablets from blisters until right before you take them.” It shows how to open the blister: tear, peel the paper layer off the foil, then push the tablet through.
  • Telmisartan section 16: “Store at 20° to 25°C (68° to 77°F); excursions permitted to 15° to 30°C (59° to 86°F) [see USP Controlled Room Temperature]. Tablets should not be removed from bottles until immediately before administration.” The Patient Information: “Do not remove telmisartan tablets from bottles until right before you take them.”

Neither label mentions pill organizers by name. Both say to leave tablets in the bottle or blister until right before the dose, which a weekly pill box would not do.

How do you travel with them?

No ice pack is needed. Bring Micardis HCT as blister cards and generic telmisartan in its closed bottle, rather than loose tablets in a pill box. Keep them in your carry-on, within 59°F to 86°F (15°C to 30°C), and away from a steamy bathroom.
