How to store Lomaira, diethylpropion, phendimetrazine and Xenical

Quoted from the US label · Unopened vs in use · Travel · Sources · Reviewed

Short answer: All four labels say room temperature and none gives a fridge instruction. Lomaira and diethylpropion say 68° to 77°F with no excursion range; diethylpropion adds keep tightly closed and protect from excessive heat. Phendimetrazine allows excursions to 59° to 86°F. Xenical section 16 says 77°F with excursions to 59° to 86°F, while its Patient Information says 59°F to 86°F, in a tightly closed container.

What do the four labels say?

Lomaira is an 8 mg phentermine tablet, diethylpropion and phendimetrazine are older appetite-suppressant tablets, and Xenical is an orlistat capsule. The generic diethylpropion and phendimetrazine labels used here are repackager labels; other makers carry their own.

The exact wording

  • Lomaira, How Supplied: “Store at 20° to 25°C (68° to 77°F) [See USP Controlled Room Temperature].” “Dispense in a tight container as defined in the USP, with a child-resistant closure (as required).” “Keep out of the reach of children.”
  • Diethylpropion, How Supplied: “Keep tightly closed. Store at 20 to 25°C (68 to 77°F) [See USP Controlled Room Temperature].” “Protect from excessive heat.”
  • Phendimetrazine, How Supplied: “Store at 20° to 25°C (68° to 77°F); excursions permitted between 15° to 30°C (59° to 86°F) [See USP Controlled Room Temperature].”
  • Xenical, section 16: “Store at 25°C (77°F); excursions permitted to 15° to 30°C (59° to 86°F) [see USP Controlled Room Temperature]. Keep bottle tightly closed.” “XENICAL should not be used after the given expiration date.”
  • Xenical, Patient Information: “Store XENICAL at 59°F to 86°F (15°C to 30°C).” “Keep XENICAL in a tightly closed container.” “Safely throw away medicine that is out of date or no longer needed.”

Xenical’s two sections disagree as printed: section 16 sets 77°F (25°C) with excursions to 59° to 86°F, while the Patient Information gives the whole 59°F to 86°F range as the storage range.

Do the controlled-substance labels add storage rules?

Lomaira and diethylpropion are Schedule IV and phendimetrazine is Schedule III, per their labels. None of the three labels gives a lock-up, storage or disposal instruction tied to that schedule. The phendimetrazine label prints “DEA Order Form Required.” under its storage line, which is about how pharmacies order it, not how you store it.

Dosing and comparisons

Dosing: Lomaira, diethylpropion, phendimetrazine and Xenical. Missed a dose: Xenical. Side effects: Lomaira, diethylpropion, phendimetrazine, Xenical. Comparisons: Lomaira vs Qsymia, diethylpropion vs phentermine, phendimetrazine vs diethylpropion, phendimetrazine vs phentermine, Xenical vs Qsymia and Xenical vs Wegovy. Molecules: phentermine and orlistat.

How do you travel with them?

No ice pack is needed. Keep them in the labeled pharmacy bottle in your carry-on and out of a hot car. Lomaira and diethylpropion give 68° to 77°F with no excursion range, so avoid long spells outside it; diethylpropion also says protect from excessive heat. Keep the diethylpropion and Xenical bottles tightly closed.
