How to store Tresiba (insulin degludec)

Quoted from the US label · Unopened vs in use · Travel · Sources · Reviewed

Short answer: Keep unopened Tresiba in the fridge at 36-46°F (2-8°C) until the expiration date, or at room temperature up to 86°F (30°C) for 56 days (8 weeks). Once in use, FlexTouch pens and vials last 56 days in the fridge or at room temperature up to 86°F. Never freeze it. Source: Tresiba label, section 16.2, Table 18.

What does the Tresiba label say?

Section 16.2: “Store unused TRESIBA in a refrigerator (36ºF to 46ºF [2ºC to 8ºC]). Do not store in the freezer or directly adjacent to the refrigerator cooling element. Do not freeze. Do not use TRESIBA if it has been frozen.” Vials are kept in the original carton to protect them from light.

How long does Tresiba last once opened?

Fifty-six days, and unlike some insulin pens it may go back in the fridge. Patient Information: store the pen you are currently using “in the refrigerator between 36°F to 46°F (2°C to 8°C) or keep at room temperature up to 86°F (30°C).” The pen “should be thrown away after 56 days if it is refrigerated or kept at room temperature, even if it still has insulin left in it and the expiration date has not passed.”

The vial Patient Information says the same for vials, and adds that unopened vials kept at room temperature are thrown away after 56 days. Keep Tresiba away from direct heat and light. For a missed dose, see missed a Tresiba dose.

What if Tresiba froze or got too warm?

Frozen: do not use it (section 16.2). Warm: room-temperature storage stops at 86°F (30°C), and the label gives no allowance above that. Ask your pharmacist about insulin that went outside these limits. See also left out of the fridge.

How do you travel with it?

Tresiba in use can travel at room temperature up to 86°F (30°C) for the rest of its 56 days. Unopened spares can also be kept up to 86°F, but that starts their own 56-day limit.

  • TSA allows medically necessary liquids over 3.4 oz in carry-on bags; declare them at the checkpoint for inspection.
  • Unused syringes and pen needles are allowed when they travel with the injectable medicine.
  • Ice packs and gel packs that keep medicine cool may go through frozen, partly frozen or melted.
  • Keep medicine in your carry-on, not checked luggage, where you cannot control the temperature. Do not let it touch an ice pack directly, since most labels say do not freeze.
