How to store NovoLog (insulin aspart)

Quoted from the US label · Unopened vs in use · Travel · Sources · Reviewed

Short answer: Keep unopened NovoLog in the fridge at 36-46°F (2-8°C) until the expiration date, or at room temperature up to 86°F (30°C) for 28 days. Once in use, vials last 28 days in the fridge or at room temperature; FlexPen, FlexTouch and PenFill cartridges last 28 days and are not refrigerated. Never use NovoLog that froze. What does the NovoLog label say?

Section 16.2: “Store unused NOVOLOG in a refrigerator between 2°C to 8°C (36°F to 46°F). Do not freeze NOVOLOG and do not use NOVOLOG if it has been frozen. Do not expose NOVOLOG to excessive heat or light. Do not withdraw NOVOLOG into a syringe and store for later use.”

How do you handle NovoLog once it is in use?

  • Remove and discard the needle after each injection from a FlexPen or FlexTouch, and store the pen without a needle attached (section 16.2).
  • Do not draw NovoLog into a syringe to store for later use.
  • Pump use: change the NovoLog in the reservoir at least every 7 days, or as the pump manual says if that is shorter, or after exposure to temperatures above 98.6°F (37°C). For a vial used to fill a pump, total in-use time is 19 days, including 7 days in the pump.
  • Diluted NovoLog (U-10 or U-50 equivalent): up to 28 days in patient use at temperatures up to 86°F (30°C).

What if NovoLog froze or got too warm?

Frozen: do not use it (section 16.2). Warm: room-temperature storage stops at 86°F (30°C), and the label says not to expose NovoLog to excessive heat. Ask your pharmacist about insulin that went outside these limits. See also left out of the fridge.

How do you travel with it?

An in-use NovoLog pen travels at room temperature for the rest of its 28 days, up to 86°F (30°C). Unopened spares should stay cold, or they start their own 28-day room-temperature limit.

  • TSA allows medically necessary liquids over 3.4 oz in carry-on bags; declare them at the checkpoint for inspection.
  • Unused syringes and pen needles are allowed when they travel with the injectable medicine.
  • Ice packs and gel packs that keep medicine cool may go through frozen, partly frozen or melted.
  • Keep medicine in your carry-on, not checked luggage, where you cannot control the temperature. Do not let it touch an ice pack directly, since most labels say do not freeze.
