Short answer: The NovoLog label has no missed-dose rule. It says to inject within 5 to 10 minutes before a meal, and the Patient Information says to eat within 5 to 10 minutes after the dose. Section 17 tells prescribers to teach patients how to handle a skipped insulin dose, so that plan comes from your diabetes team.
| Situation | What the label says |
|---|---|
| Timing | Within 5 to 10 minutes before a meal (2.2) |
| After the dose | Eat a meal within 5 to 10 minutes (Patient Information) |
| Missed-dose rule | None in the label |
| Who sets the plan | Prescriber instructs on a skipped insulin dose (17) |
| Peak level | Median 40 to 50 minutes after dosing (12.3) |
No. We checked the NovoLog prescribing information, Patient Information and Instructions for Use from Novo Nordisk on DailyMed. None gives a missed-dose instruction.
Section 2.2 says to inject NovoLog under the skin within 5 to 10 minutes before a meal. The Patient Information adds that NovoLog starts acting fast, so you should eat a meal within 5 to 10 minutes after you take your dose.
Your prescriber. Section 17 tells prescribers to instruct patients on handling special situations, including an inadequate or skipped insulin dose, an accidental extra dose, inadequate food intake and skipped meals. The label leaves that plan to the care team.
Section 12.3 gives a median time to peak concentration of 40 to 50 minutes, compared with 80 to 120 minutes for regular human insulin, and an average apparent half-life of 81 minutes after an injection under the skin. The dose is meant to cover the meal right after it.
The label does not describe doing that. Section 5.3 says low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) is the most common adverse reaction of all insulins, including NovoLog, and that severe hypoglycemia may be life-threatening. Ask your diabetes team before changing a dose.
