Short answer: Keep unopened Novolin R in the fridge at 36-46°F (2-8°C) until the expiration date. Out of the fridge, a vial lasts 42 days up to 77°F (25°C) and a FlexPen 28 days up to 86°F (30°C). Once opened, neither the vial nor the FlexPen goes back in the fridge. Do not use Novolin R that froze. Source: Novolin R label, section 16.2.
Section 16.2: “Do not freeze.” “Do not use if it has been frozen.” “Do not use after the expiration date.” “Do not expose to excessive heat or light.”
| Form | Unopened, refrigerated | Unopened, room temp | In use (opened), room temp |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 mL multiple-dose vial | Until expiration date | 42 days up to 77°F (25°C) | 42 days up to 77°F (25°C), do not refrigerate |
| 3 mL FlexPen | Until expiration date | 28 days up to 86°F (30°C) | 28 days up to 86°F (30°C), do not refrigerate |
Section 16.2 also says to remove and throw away the needle after each injection and store the FlexPen without a needle attached. Intravenous infusion bags prepared as the label directs are stable at room temperature for 24 hours.
The label gives them separately. The vial gets 42 days but at a lower top temperature, 77°F (25°C). The FlexPen gets 28 days up to 86°F (30°C). The label does not explain the difference. Both are kept at room temperature once opened; the table says do not refrigerate.
Novolin R is a clear solution and is not rolled or mixed before a dose. See the Novolin R dosing schedule, Novolin R side effects, Novolin N (same storage table) and Humulin R U-100, Lilly’s regular insulin with a 31-day vial limit.
An opened Novolin R vial travels at room temperature for the rest of its 42 days, but its limit is 77°F (25°C), lower than the pen. An in-use FlexPen goes up to 86°F (30°C) for the rest of its 28 days. Keep spares off direct contact with an ice pack, since frozen Novolin R is not used.
