How to store Fosamax, Actonel and ibandronate (generic Boniva)

Quoted from the US label · Unopened vs in use · Travel · Sources · Reviewed

Short answer: All three are room-temperature tablets, but the labels word it differently. Fosamax: 59-86°F (15-30°C), in a tightly closed container. Actonel: 68-77°F (20-25°C). Generic ibandronate (Boniva): 77°F (25°C) with excursions to 59-86°F, in a tightly closed container. No fridge for any of them. Sources: each label, section 16, and the Medication Guides.

What do the three labels say?

Fosamax (alendronate), Actonel (risedronate) and ibandronate are bisphosphonate tablets for osteoporosis. DailyMed has no current Boniva brand tablet label, so this page uses the current generic ibandronate sodium label from Bionpharma.

Why storage matters less than timing here

These tablets are taken once a week (Fosamax 70 mg, Actonel 35 mg) or once a month (Actonel 150 mg, ibandronate 150 mg), so one card can last a month or more. What the labels stress most is how you take them: first thing in the morning with plain water, then wait before food, drink or other medicines, staying upright. Fosamax and Actonel say at least 30 minutes; ibandronate says 60. See the Fosamax, Actonel and ibandronate dosing schedules.

A weekly or monthly dose is easy to forget. Each label has its own missed-dose rule: Fosamax, Actonel and ibandronate. Comparisons: Fosamax vs Actonel and ibandronate vs Fosamax.

How do you travel with them?

No ice pack is needed. Keep the blister card or bottle closed in your carry-on, within 59-86°F (15-30°C), and out of a hot car. If a weekly or monthly dose falls on a travel day, the label rules about plain water and waiting before food still apply.
