Short answer: Keep unopened Basaglar KwikPen and Tempo Pen in the fridge at 36-46°F (2-8°C) until the expiration date, or up to 86°F (30°C) for 28 days. After first use, keep the pen at room temperature up to 86°F for up to 28 days; do not refrigerate it. Do not freeze Basaglar, and do not use it if it froze. Source: Basaglar label, section 16.2, and Instructions for Use.
Section 16.2: “Protect BASAGLAR from heat and light. Do not freeze BASAGLAR. In-use BASAGLAR prefilled pens must be used within 28 days or be discarded, even if they still contain BASAGLAR.”
| Pen | Unopened, room temp (up to 86°F) | Unopened, refrigerated | In use, room temp (up to 86°F) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 mL KwikPen | 28 days | Until expiration date | 28 days, do not refrigerate |
| 3 mL Tempo Pen | 28 days | Until expiration date | 28 days, do not refrigerate |
Basaglar comes only as prefilled pens; the label lists no vial. The Patient Information has no storage section; the storage text for patients is in each pen’s Instructions for Use.
Basaglar is insulin glargine, like Lantus and Semglee, but each has its own label. See the Basaglar dosing schedule, Basaglar side effects and missed a Basaglar dose.
An in-use Basaglar pen travels at room temperature, up to 86°F (30°C), for the rest of its 28 days. Unopened spares can stay cold; out of the fridge they have 28 days. Keep them off direct contact with an ice pack, since frozen Basaglar is not used.
