Definition: Hypertension is the medical word for high blood pressure. NHLBI says blood pressure is high when readings are consistently 130 mm Hg or higher for the top number (systolic) or 80 mm Hg or higher for the bottom number (diastolic). It usually has no symptoms, which is why it is found by measuring.
| Category | Systolic | Diastolic |
|---|---|---|
| Normal | Under 120 | and under 80 |
| Elevated | 120 to 129 | and under 80 |
| Stage 1 high blood pressure | 130 to 139 | or 80 to 89 |
| Stage 2 high blood pressure | 140 or higher | or 90 or higher |
| Hypertensive crisis | Over 180 | or over 120 |
NHLBI says a reading in the crisis range means contacting a provider right away.
Testosterone labels track blood pressure closely. Xyosted reported hypertension in 12.7% of men in its 1-year study and an average rise of 3.9/1.5 mm Hg after 12 weeks, and it is not recommended with uncontrolled high blood pressure. Jatenzo reported an average 24-hour rise of 4.9/2.5 mm Hg, with 7.2% of men starting or raising blood pressure medicine. Cialis is not recommended with uncontrolled high blood pressure. Pulmonary hypertension, which some growth hormone and weight loss labels mention, is a different condition: high pressure in the lung arteries.
Single readings move a lot. Home readings taken at the same time of day, written down with the date of the last dose, show a trend a prescriber can act on.
