Testosterone Undecanoate: US products, label dosing and warnings

US products · Approved vs off-label use · Half-life notes

What is testosterone undecanoate?

Testosterone undecanoate is testosterone attached to a long undecanoate ester. In the US it is FDA approved for testosterone replacement in men in two very different forms: Aveed, a long-acting injection into muscle, and Jatenzo, Kyzatrex and Tlando, capsules taken by mouth with food.

Also known as: Aveed, Jatenzo, Kyzatrex, Tlando, Nebido.

US products

Aveed comes as a single-use vial of 750 mg in 3 mL (250 mg/mL). Jatenzo capsules come in 158, 198 and 237 mg; the Kyzatrex label lists 50, 100, 150 and 200 mg capsules; Tlando comes as 112.5 mg capsules. The products are not interchangeable.

Approval status and how it is used

All four FDA labels approve testosterone undecanoate for testosterone replacement in adult men with primary hypogonadism or hypogonadotropic hypogonadism.

Aveed is 750 mg (3 mL) injected into muscle at the start, again after 4 weeks, then every 10 weeks. It has a boxed warning: serious pulmonary oil microembolism (POME) reactions, such as an urge to cough, shortness of breath, throat tightening, chest pain, dizziness and fainting, and anaphylaxis, have happened during or right after injections, including after the first dose. Patients are watched in the clinic for 30 minutes after each injection, and Aveed is available only through a restricted program (the Aveed REMS). See the Aveed side effects page.

The capsules are taken twice a day with food, and the dose is adjusted from blood testosterone. Jatenzo starts at 237 mg twice daily (range 158 to 396 mg twice daily); Kyzatrex starts at 200 mg twice daily (range 100 mg once daily to 400 mg twice daily); Tlando is 225 mg (two 112.5 mg capsules) twice daily. The Jatenzo and Tlando labels note that a boxed warning about blood pressure was removed in 2025, but all three labels still warn that they can raise blood pressure. See the Jatenzo, Kyzatrex and Tlando side effects pages.

Testosterone is a Schedule III controlled substance in the US (21 CFR 1308.13(f)), and WADA bans it in sport when it is taken from outside the body.

Testosterone undecanoate half-life and time to peak

  • Half-lifeNot listed
  • Time to peak (Tmax)Not listed

The injection and the capsules behave very differently, so we do not list one number. The Tlando label says testosterone undecanoate itself has an elimination half-life of about 2 hours after a capsule dose, and that testosterone peaked at a median of about 5 hours after a dose. The Aveed label gives no half-life for the injection; it is given every 10 weeks after the first two doses.

How to track testosterone undecanoate in Dose Track

  1. Add testosterone undecanoate as a custom compound. Start typing its name and Dose Track fills in the details from its research library for you to check, and it sits next to everything else you take.
  2. Log each injection or capsule dose when you take it, with the product and the amount, so your history shows exactly what you took and when.
  3. Set reminders on your own schedule, whether that is daily, weekly or every few days.
  4. Your log is stored on your phone and no account is needed. Data only leaves it for features you choose, like AI answers and lab reading.

Frequently asked questions

What is the half-life of testosterone undecanoate?+
The injection and the capsules behave very differently, so we do not list one number. The Tlando label says testosterone undecanoate itself has an elimination half-life of about 2 hours after a capsule dose, and that testosterone peaked at a median of about 5 hours after a dose. The Aveed label gives no half-life for the injection; it is given every 10 weeks after the first two doses.
Is Aveed the same as Jatenzo or Kyzatrex?+
They contain the same ingredient, testosterone undecanoate, but Aveed is an injection into muscle given every 10 weeks after the first two doses, while Jatenzo, Kyzatrex and Tlando are capsules taken twice a day with food. Doses do not carry over between them.
Why do you have to wait 30 minutes after an Aveed shot?+
The Aveed label has a boxed warning about pulmonary oil microembolism reactions and anaphylaxis during or right after the injection, so patients are observed in the clinic for 30 minutes after every injection.
Can I track testosterone undecanoate in Dose Track?+
Yes. Testosterone undecanoate is in Dose Track's research library, so when you add it as a custom compound its details are filled in for you to check. You can then log each dose next to your other compounds, set reminders on your own schedule, and see your history next to your testosterone and lab results. Your log is stored on your phone and no account is needed. Data only leaves it for features you choose, like AI answers and lab reading.
