Methyltestosterone is an oral androgen, testosterone with a methyl group added at the 17-alpha position so it survives the liver better when swallowed. It is still FDA approved and sold in the US as Methitest tablets and generic capsules.
Also known as: Methitest, Android, Oreton Methyl.
Current US labels on DailyMed list Methitest 10 mg scored tablets and methyltestosterone 10 mg capsules. Drugs@FDA lists older 5 mg and 25 mg tablets (including Android) as discontinued.
The Methitest label indicates methyltestosterone for testosterone replacement in men with primary hypogonadism or hypogonadotropic hypogonadism, for selected boys with clearly delayed puberty, and, secondarily, for some women with advancing inoperable breast cancer that has spread to bone. It gives a usual starting dose of 10 to 50 mg daily for replacement in men, and 50 to 200 mg daily for breast cancer in women. The label says safety and efficacy have not been shown for age-related low testosterone, and that it has not been shown to be safe and effective for athletic performance.
Anabolic steroids are Schedule III controlled substances in the US, and this one is named in the federal list (21 CFR 1308.13(f)). Having it without a valid prescription is illegal. It is on the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Prohibited List as an anabolic agent, banned in and out of competition.
The label warns that cholestatic hepatitis and jaundice occur with 17-alpha-alkylated androgens like methyltestosterone at relatively low doses, and that long use of high doses has been linked to peliosis hepatis (blood-filled cysts in the liver, which can be fatal) and liver tumors, so liver tests should be done periodically. It also warns about blood clots, raised blood pressure, swelling, breast growth in men, lower sperm counts with long use, virilization in women, and that it can change the dose of blood thinners people need.
The Methitest label says methyltestosterone is broken down less by the liver than testosterone and has a longer half-life, but it gives no number and no time to peak, so we do not list one.
