Vardenafil vs sildenafil: how do Levitra and Viagra differ?

Doses · Timing · Food · Side effects · Warnings

Short answer: Vardenafil (the drug in Levitra) and sildenafil (Viagra) are PDE5 inhibitor tablets for erectile dysfunction, both taken about an hour before sex, at most once a day.12 Vardenafil usually starts at 10 mg and sildenafil at 50 mg. The vardenafil label adds a QT-interval warning. Neither label reports a trial against the other.

How do vardenafil and sildenafil compare side by side?

From the US vardenafil (Teva generic film-coated tablet) and Viagra labels. Side-effect rows come from each label's own placebo-controlled trials.

Is vardenafil the same as Levitra?

Vardenafil is the drug in Levitra. There is no current Levitra-brand label on DailyMed, so this page uses Teva's generic film-coated vardenafil label in the same strengths. The orally disintegrating tablet (Staxyn) is a different product with different dosing.1

How do the side-effect numbers compare?

In vardenafil's pooled trials of 5, 10 or 20 mg, headache was 15% vs 4% on placebo, flushing 11% vs 1% and stuffy nose 9% vs 3%.1 In Viagra's flexible-dose trials, which match how it is usually taken, headache was 16% vs 4%, flushing 10% vs 1% and indigestion 7% vs 2%; abnormal vision, mostly a color tinge, was 3% vs 0%.2 These numbers come from separate trials with different people, lengths and methods, so they are not a head-to-head comparison.

What warnings do they share?

  • Nitrates and riociguat: neither is used with them.12
  • Blood pressure: both briefly lowered blood pressure in healthy volunteers, and both labels give rules for alpha-blockers.12
  • Eyes and ears: both carry warnings on sudden vision loss (NAION) and sudden hearing loss.12
  • Heart rhythm: only the vardenafil label has a QT-prolongation warning.1

Frequently asked questions

Is 10 mg vardenafil the same as 50 mg sildenafil?+
The labels do not give a conversion. They are the usual starting doses of each drug, from separate trial programs.12
Does food affect vardenafil or sildenafil?+
Both may be taken with or without food. High-fat meals lowered vardenafil's peak level by 18% to 50%, and the Viagra patient leaflet says it may take a little longer to work after a high-fat meal.12
How far apart should doses be?+
Both labels say at most once a day; the vardenafil patient leaflet says doses should be at least 24 hours apart.12
Can I log as-needed doses in Dose Track?+
Yes. You can log as-needed tablets with the time and dose and keep notes.
