Creatine monohydrate vs creatine HCl: is HCl better?

Head-to-head trials · Strength · Safety

Short answer: Creatine monohydrate is the form behind most of the research, with meta-analyses showing more lean mass and strength alongside training.1 Creatine HCl has only a few small trials. Two compared it with monohydrate: one 8-week study found no extra benefit from HCl,2 and one 4-week study in 40 soccer players found larger sprint and power gains with HCl.3

How do creatine monohydrate and creatine HCl compare side by side?

From the human trials and the NIH fact sheet cited. Amounts are study protocols, not advice.
Creatine monohydrateCreatine HCl
Amount of human researchLarge: a 2017 meta-analysis pooled 22 trials and 721 older adults1Small: a handful of trials with 40 or fewer people each234
Lean mass with trainingAbout 1.4 kg more than placebo in older adults1More muscle than placebo in one 8-week trial of 40 young adults2
Head-to-head resultSame gains as HCl in strength and muscle over 8 weeks2Larger jump, sprint and peak power gains than monohydrate over 4 weeks in one trial3
Amounts studiedIn the head-to-head trial: 0.03 g per kg a day, with or without a 5-day loading phase20.03 g per kg a day in the same trial; 750 to 1,500 mg a day in a trial in women around menopause24
Side effects reportedWeight gain is common; no consistent other side effects; considered safe for short-term use by healthy adults5Well tolerated in an 8-week trial, no severe side effects4

What does the creatine monohydrate research show?

NIH's exercise fact sheet says creatine can improve strength, power and repeated sprints, mostly in short, intense efforts, and is of little value for endurance sports. It often adds weight, through water held in muscle, and has no consistent set of other side effects.5

In a meta-analysis of 22 trials in 721 adults with a mean age of 57 to 70, creatine taken during resistance training gave about 1.37 kg more lean mass than placebo, plus more chest press and leg press strength.1 In postmenopausal women, a 2026 meta-analysis of 7 trials found small gains in lean mass and leg strength, seen when at least 5 g a day was combined with training; bone density did not change.6

What do the creatine HCl trials show?

In an 8-week trial, 40 adults aged 18 to 25 doing resistance training took creatine HCl, monohydrate with a loading phase, monohydrate without loading, or placebo. All creatine groups gained more strength and muscle than placebo, and HCl showed no benefit over monohydrate.2

In a 4-week trial in 40 college soccer players, all creatine forms beat placebo on peak power and sprint tests, and HCl and creatine ethyl ester gave larger gains than monohydrate.3 A third trial, in 36 women around menopause, tested low amounts of HCl against placebo only; 1,500 mg a day improved reaction time and raised brain creatine.4

So which one?

Monohydrate has far more human data behind it. The two head-to-head trials disagree, and both are small and short, so the claim that HCl works better or at lower amounts rests on thin evidence. This is general information, not personal advice. More detail: the Creatine Monohydrate guide.

Frequently asked questions

Is creatine HCl better than monohydrate?+
The evidence is split and small. One 8-week trial found no added benefit from HCl;2 one 4-week trial in 40 soccer players found larger power and sprint gains with HCl.3
Does creatine cause weight gain?+
Often, yes. NIH notes 1 to 2 kg of body weight in a month in some strength-training studies, from water held in muscle and possibly more muscle protein.5
Is creatine safe?+
NIH says creatine is considered safe for short-term use by healthy adults, and evidence shows use for several years is safe.5
Can I track creatine in Dose Track?+
Yes. Log it daily with reminders and add notes on your training.
