How to store glucagon: Gvoke, Baqsimi, Zegalogue and emergency kits

Quoted from the US label · Unopened vs in use · Travel · Sources · Reviewed

Short answer: Each rescue product has its own label. Gvoke: 68-77°F (20-25°C) in its sealed pouch or carton; do not refrigerate or freeze. Baqsimi: up to 86°F (30°C) in its shrink-wrapped tube. Amphastar Glucagon Emergency Kit: 68-77°F, not frozen, away from light, used right after mixing. Zegalogue: fridge, or up to 12 months at 68-77°F, then never back in the fridge.

What do the labels say?

Storage text from each current US label (section 16 and the patient leaflet or Instructions for Use).
ProductTemperatureOther conditions
Gvoke HypoPen, PFS and Kit (glucagon injection)20-25°C (68-77°F); excursions 15-30°C (59-86°F)Do not refrigerate or freeze. HypoPen and PFS in the sealed foil pouch; Kit vial and syringe together in the carton
Baqsimi (glucagon nasal powder)Up to 30°C (86°F)Keep in the shrink-wrapped tube until use; an opened tube may let in moisture
Glucagon Emergency Kit for Low Blood Sugar (Amphastar)20-25°C (68-77°F)Do not freeze; keep in the original package away from light; use immediately after mixing
Zegalogue (dasiglucagon injection)Refrigerator 2-8°C (36-46°F), or 20-25°C (68-77°F) for up to 12 monthsDo not freeze; keep in the red protective case, away from light; do not return to the fridge

Zegalogue is dasiglucagon, a glucagon analog, not glucagon itself. Generic glucagon kits from other makers carry their own labels; check the one from your pharmacy.

How should Gvoke be stored?

Section 16: store Gvoke HypoPen, Gvoke PFS and Gvoke Kit “at 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F); excursions permitted between 15°C and 30°C (59°F and 86°F). Do not refrigerate or freeze. Do not expose to extreme temperatures.” Keep the HypoPen and PFS in the original sealed foil pouch until time of use, and the Kit vial and pouched syringe together in the carton. The Kit Instructions for Use add: protect the vial from light exposure.

Each device is a single dose. The Instructions for Use say to replace it before the expiration date on the box.

How should Baqsimi be stored?

Section 16: “Store at temperatures up to 86°F (30°C) in the shrink wrapped tube provided.” “Keep BAQSIMI in the shrink wrapped tube until ready to use. If the tube has been opened, BAQSIMI may have been exposed to moisture and may not work as expected.” Each device holds one dose; replace it right away after use, and before the expiration date on the tube or carton.

How should a glucagon emergency kit be stored?

Amphastar Glucagon for Injection, section 16.2: “Store Glucagon for Injection at 68°F to 77°F (20°C to 25°C). Do not use Glucagon for Injection if the expiration date has passed. Do not freeze. Keep in its original package and away from light.” After mixing the powder with the diluent: “Use reconstituted Glucagon for Injection immediately. Discard unused portion.”

How should Zegalogue be stored?

Section 16.2: store Zegalogue in a refrigerator at 36-46°F (2-8°C), away from the cooling element, and do not freeze it. It “can be kept at room temperature between 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F) for up to 12 months.” Write the date it came out of the fridge on the protective case, and do not put it back in the fridge after room-temperature storage. Discard it at the end of the 12 months or at the expiration date, whichever comes first.

How do you travel with it?

Gvoke, Baqsimi and glucagon kits are room-temperature products, so they need no ice pack; keep them out of a hot car. Zegalogue already at room temperature stays out of the fridge, and its 12-month clock keeps running.

  • TSA allows medically necessary liquids over 3.4 oz in carry-on bags; declare them at the checkpoint for inspection.
  • Unused syringes and pen needles are allowed when they travel with the injectable medicine.
  • Ice packs and gel packs that keep medicine cool may go through frozen, partly frozen or melted.
  • Keep medicine in your carry-on, not checked luggage, where you cannot control the temperature. Do not let it touch an ice pack directly, since most labels say do not freeze.
