Definition: Depression is a mental health condition marked by ongoing sadness, loss of energy and trouble handling daily life. The NCI dictionary adds loss of pleasure in activities, feelings of worthlessness, changes in eating or sleep, and thoughts of death or suicide. It can affect anyone and can be treated. Anyone thinking about suicide can call or text 988 in the US.
| Label | What it says |
|---|---|
| Lupron Depot 3.75 mg | Depression or mood swings in 22% in the endometriosis trials vs 3% on placebo; many effects reflect low estrogen. |
| Xyosted | Depression that led to stopping in 2 of 283 men, and suicide attempts in 2 more (1.4% in all). |
| Contrave | Boxed warning about suicidal thoughts and behaviors (it contains bupropion); depression 6.3% vs 5.9% on placebo. |
| Propecia and Proscar | Depression and suicidal thoughts reported after approval; how often is not known. |
A label listing depression does not mean the medicine causes it in most people. Placebo rates show how often it shows up anyway.
Mood changes can be slow and hard to date. A short daily mood or energy rating next to dose dates helps show whether a change started after a new medicine or dose, which is what a prescriber needs to judge it. Sudden thoughts of self-harm are not something to log and wait on: NIMH points to the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, and 911 in an emergency.
