What is retinalamin?

Retinalamin is a Russian drug made by Geropharm from water-soluble protein fragments (polypeptides) taken from cattle retina. In the studies we found it was injected into muscle as a nerve-protecting treatment for glaucoma and diabetic eye disease. It is not approved in the US, and the published studies are small Russian reports.

Also known as: Retinalamine, retinal polypeptide complex.

Common vial sizes

The 2025 glaucoma study below used Retinalamin 5 mg vials, each mixed with 1.0 mL of saline (0.9% sodium chloride) and injected into muscle. That is a study protocol, not a recommendation.

Worked reconstitution example

Here is the math for a 5 mg vial mixed with 1 mL of bacteriostatic water, drawing 2.5 mg with a U-100 insulin syringe (1 mL = 100 units).

  1. Concentration. 5 mg ÷ 1 mL = 5 mg/mL
  2. Volume to draw. 2.5 mg ÷ 5 mg/mL = 0.5 mL
  3. Syringe units. 0.5 mL × 100 = 50 units
The amount here is an example to show the math, not a recommendation. How much to take is a decision for you and your prescriber.

Same amount, different water volumes

Adding more water doesn't change how much retinalamin is in the vial. It only spreads it over more liquid, so each draw is bigger and easier to read.

What is known in people?

Several Russian eye clinics have reported on it, all in the same Russian journal. In a randomized study of 147 people with early glaucoma and controlled eye pressure (Strakhov 2020), one group got a course of retinalamin every 6 months for 2 years; the nerve fiber layer stayed stable in that group and thinned in the untreated group, but the two groups did not differ at the end. In 56 people with advanced glaucoma (Dorofeev 2025), 10 injections of 5 mg into muscle every 3 months for 2 years were followed by slower loss of visual field and nerve fiber than in people who got no nerve-protecting treatment; this was not a randomized trial.

In 146 people with glaucoma randomly split 2 to 1 (Aprelev 2018), one course of 10 injections into muscle on top of standard treatment was linked to better vision and contrast tests over 3 months, with no side effects reported. In 56 people with diabetic eye disease (Malakhova 2024), the authors reported improvements on scans and nerve tests with injections into muscle compared with no treatment. None of these abstracts describes a placebo or blinding. In lab tests the drug bound glutamate receptors linked to retinal nerve cell loss, and in mice it reached brain and eye tissue (Verlov 2021, co-authored by staff of a drug company).

Retinalamin half-life and time to peak

  • Half-lifeNot listed
  • Time to peak (Tmax)Not listed

We could not find a published human half-life for retinalamin. A mouse study (Verlov 2021) found it in brain and eye tissue 30 minutes after injection into a vein or muscle and suggested it leaves mainly through the kidneys, but did not report a half-life.

How to track retinalamin in Dose Track

  1. Add retinalamin as a custom compound. Start typing its name and Dose Track fills in the details from its research library for you to check, and it sits next to everything else you take.
  2. Save your vial: enter the vial size and how much water you added. From then on every amount you log shows as syringe units, and the reconstitution planner suggests a water volume that lands on a clean mark.
  3. Log each shot. The app subtracts it from the vial, shows what is left, and warns you before you run out.
  4. Set reminders on your own schedule, whether that is daily, weekly or every few days.
  5. Your log is stored on your phone and no account is needed. Data only leaves it for features you choose, like AI answers and lab reading.

Frequently asked questions

How much bacteriostatic water do I add to a 5 mg retinalamin vial?+
There is no single right amount. More water makes each draw bigger and easier to measure; less water makes it smaller. For example, 1 mL in a 5 mg vial gives 5 mg/mL, so 2.5 mg is 0.5 mL, or 50 units on a U-100 insulin syringe. That amount is only an example for the math, not a recommendation. The free Dose Track reconstitution calculator works it out for any vial and amount.
How many units is 2.5 mg of retinalamin?+
It depends on the concentration in your vial. At 5 mg/mL (5 mg mixed with 1 mL), 2.5 mg is 0.5 mL, which is 50 units on a U-100 insulin syringe, where 1 mL is 100 units. Divide the amount by the concentration to get mL, then multiply by 100.
What is the half-life of retinalamin?+
We could not find a published human half-life for retinalamin. A mouse study (Verlov 2021) found it in brain and eye tissue 30 minutes after injection into a vein or muscle and suggested it leaves mainly through the kidneys, but did not report a half-life.
Is retinalamin approved in the US?+
No. We found no retinalamin product in Drugs@FDA. The published studies come from Russia, where it is made by Geropharm.
Does retinalamin slow glaucoma?+
It is not proven. Small Russian studies reported slower nerve and vision loss, but the largest randomized one found no difference between groups after 2 years, and none of the abstracts describes a placebo.
Can I track retinalamin in Dose Track?+
Yes. Retinalamin is in Dose Track's research library, so when you add it as a custom compound its details are filled in for you to check. You can then log each shot next to your other compounds, save your vial and how much water you added so every amount shows in syringe units, see how much is left in the vial, and get reminders. Your log is stored on your phone and no account is needed. Data only leaves it for features you choose, like AI answers and lab reading.
