Matured hop extract is made from hops that have been aged and oxidized, which turns their bitter acids into milder "matured hop bitter acids" (MHBA). Hops are the plant that gives beer its bitterness.
Also known as: matured hop bitter acids, MHBA, MHE, hop bitter acids, oxidized hops.
A body-fat trial gave a daily drink with 35 mg of MHBA for 12 weeks (Morimoto-Kobayashi 2016); a memory trial used 35 mg a day in capsules for 12 weeks (Fukuda 2020a). These are study protocols, not a recommendation.
Under the 1994 dietary supplement law (DSHEA), FDA does not approve dietary supplements before they are marketed, and the maker, not FDA, is responsible for safety and labeling. The trials below tested matured hop extract in Japan, in a drink or in capsules.
What studies show: in 200 overweight Japanese adults, a daily drink with matured hop extract for 12 weeks lowered belly (visceral) fat on CT scans compared with placebo (Morimoto-Kobayashi 2016). In 60 adults aged 45 to 64 who felt their memory was slipping, 12 weeks of MHBA improved some test scores and lowered fatigue and anxiety ratings (Fukuda 2020a). In 100 adults aged 45 to 69, MHBA improved an attention test at 12 weeks, with memory gains only in a subgroup (Fukuda 2020b). Most authors on all three trials worked for Kirin, a Japanese beer and drinks company.
Safety: no side effects related to the drink were seen in the body-fat trial (Morimoto-Kobayashi 2016). The sources here do not describe drug interactions.
We could not find a single published half-life or time to peak for matured hop extract that applies to a supplement dose, so we do not list one. Plant extracts are mixtures of many compounds, so no single figure would describe them.
