Short answer: Armodafinil has a half-life of about 15 hours. Levels peak about 2 hours (fasted) after a dose. People vary, so treat these as estimates.
Armodafinil is the R-enantiomer of modafinil, the longer-lasting of its two mirror-image forms. It is sold as Nuvigil and as generic tablets, approved to improve wakefulness in adults with excessive sleepiness from obstructive sleep apnea, narcolepsy or shift work disorder. It is a Schedule IV controlled substance.
Also known as: Nuvigil.
Nuvigil comes as 50 mg, 150 mg, 200 mg and 250 mg tablets.
The FDA Nuvigil label dose is 150 mg to 250 mg once a day in the morning for sleep apnea or narcolepsy, or 150 mg about 1 hour before the work shift for shift work disorder. In sleep apnea, the label says there is no consistent evidence that 250 mg works better than 150 mg. It is not approved for children.
Like modafinil, the label warns about serious rashes including Stevens-Johnson syndrome, allergic swelling (angioedema), psychiatric symptoms, and reduced effect of hormonal birth control. It is Schedule IV. See also modafinil.
The FDA Nuvigil label gives an apparent terminal half-life of about 15 hours and peak levels about 2 hours after a dose on an empty stomach; food can delay the peak by 2 to 4 hours. Steady state is reached within 7 days, at about 1.8 times the exposure of a single dose.
